If you have high cholesterol, you are also at higher risk for cardiovascular disease. But the good news is that this is a risk you can control. You can lower your cholesterol, "bad" LDL and raise your "good" cholesterol is the HDL. You just have to make a few simple changes.

"I tell patients, you have to start somewhere and just keep going," says Suzanne Steinbaum, DO, attending cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. You still may need to take medicine to get your cholesterol levels back on track. But if you make a few small changes, you may be able to reduce the dose and the probability of side effects.
